Just as the grandfather clock struck three, Delilah warmly smiled at the group of students standing outside her Charms classroom, and beckoned them in with a feminine swish of her wand.
Now, what was wrong with that?
For one thing, Delilah did not smile. When she did, it was an ill omen that something not quite good was going to happen. It was a terrifying sight. And Delilah Hudson? Beckoning the students in? No letting them impatiently stand outside her door for a good two minutes? This was obviously someone else under the effects of a Polyjuice Potion!
The current class she was holding wasn't quite your usual, organized class; this was a mix of sixth years and seventh years from all the Houses. It only really depended on how high their marks were. "Take your seats," she called, tapping her trimmed nails against the surface of her table. "Today we're going to learn about non-verbal spells, and maybe, if you're good and our lessons flow quickly, wandless magic by the end of two weeks."

Emelie entered the room, her brow ruffled slightly. She so wasnt accustomed to this side of Professor Hudson, but no matter. Emelie did not miss any educational opportunities that came her way, unless of course they were intended for younger or older years. But this opportunity was right up her alley, and she was looking forwards to it.

As the class settled down, Delilah left her seat and swiped up a piece of chalk, jotting the words NON-VERBAL SPELLS down on the blackboard. She underlined it twice before tossing the chalk back into the chalkbox and turning to the students.
"Alright. So, for the past few years in Charms, I've been teaching you that spells properly work with the correct wand-movements, the correct pronunciation of the incantation, etcetera." She began, gesturing with her wand. "In this class, we're going to progess to the level after that: casting spells without the incantations. Now, can someone elaborate how this is possible? Let's briefly tackle theoritical before practical."

Emelie raised her hand. "Well, to perform a spell without an incantation requires an immense amount of concentration and discipline. That said, some spells are easier to perform non-verbally than others."

"Three points to Ravenclaw. Thank you, Ms. Sanders." Delilah nodded her head imperiously. "Concentration, yes, discipline, yes, but most importantly: intent." She spelled that word on the board and encircled it. "How so? Can anyone answer this? It's the fundamentals of spell-casting; I'm sure you guys can make a guess."

Marius avoided the Professor's eyes and pretended to dully concentrate on the board. Eye-contact was a no-no during class recitation. How he even got to this class, he didn't quite know (dumb luck, he theorized when he saw his Exceeding Expectations).
But intent made a lot of sense, he surmised, sinking down on his seat. It was pretty stupid to believe that words and simple wand-swishing could generate a spell, though the two methods made the grasp of magic stronger and more fluid (in the same way a wand or a staff was a medium for magic with their magical properties). It was how any of the three Unforgiveables couldn't work if the caster wouldn't generate enough hate. Hate was intent.
Theoritically, he could levitate a feather without saying Wingardium Leviosa, but that meant a buttload of intent and needing the feather to float. It was the same theory behind accidental magic; children's growing magical cores and emotional spikes, etc, etc.
Marius rolled his eyes. He'd let the nerds answer that question.

Emelie remained quiet, fiddling with her quill as she looked around the room. Anyone who was here now had to be excelling in charms, so she was certain that someone would speak up soon.

The student behind him kicked the back of Marius' seat, and he jerked, surprised. When the Professor called on him, he grumbled and glared at the culprit. "So, um," he drawled, slowly standing. "Professor. Hi."
Snickers exploded from his housemates. He sighed at them and scratched the back of his head. "Okay. So. Intent. Hocus pocus, wand-swishing and abra-cadabra aside, it's intent that really fuels our use of magic. The example I can give is the use of the Unforgivables. You can't really use the torturing curse if you can't feel hate very well. Similarly, intent is how children create this accidental magic mojo. Also, another example is the telepathic muggles, who are squibs with magically-sufficient genes, explaining how they can bend spoons, make things levitate." He sat down and huffed. "Theoretically, I can turn Samwell's," he growled at the person behind him, "Face purple if I really want to, but it takes a lot of concentration and emotional capability. This can be made easier by an erratic, less-controlled magical core that children have--recap: accidental magic--but my magical core is matured, so that's gonna be..." he trailed off. "Yeah."

I knew you were in this class for a reason. Delilah thought, the corners of her lips curling up into a (slightly) proud smile. Marius was the paragon of unmotivated genius.
"Thank you, Mr. Min Yeon." She thanked, inclining her head. "Five points to Gryffindor." Hah, she remained stingy with the points. There was no need for favoritism now. "Exactly. Not many wizards acknowledge the fact that it is intent that powers our ability to perform magic, maybe with the help of magical genes that are inherited as media. You cannot call yourself a graduate of my class if you do not know this. I'd talk some more, but Mr. Min Yeon had basically explained it in a dumbed down version. So we'll skip that and you guys show off to me. Let's start with the simplest levitation spells. The first one who is able to do it gets thirty points for their house. Wands out!"

With a groan, Marius pulled out his wand and waited with a pout as the Professor distributed the feathers. She was awfully stingy with points. But at least she was beautiful.
He rolled up his sleeves and glared at his feather. Let's do this.

Emelie pulled out her wand and focused all of her concentration on the feather, repeating to herself over and over that she wanted the dang feather to levitate. Badly. After a little while, the feather rose the tiniest little bit.

Marius really didn't feel motivated to lift the feather. This could be faked really easily: a quiet breeze charm, hey, but the teacher had a sharp eye.
He turned around and noticed one of the smart underclassman's feather hover and tremble. Wasn't that Emerson's girl? Emelie something? "Psst." He called.

Emelie made no response until she had lowered the feather. After she had, she allowed herself to looked up at Marius.

"That was pretty good," he complimented, smiling crookedly. Marius glanced at the teacher from the corner of his eyes to make sure he wouldn't get them in trouble. "Name's Marius."
